Living abroad obliges you to learn something about culture of the country. It is also good to know something about it, to have some topics to talk about with your colleagues at work (well, my only colleagues at the office are 2 spanish students, but normally iaeste students are more lucky….) That is why I am slowly getting acquainted with romanian cinematography. So far this process is fatiguing but I look optimistically to the future…

The second film I watched, together with some others IAESTE students was 'Moarteadomnului Lăzărescu' directed by Cristi Puiu. In this film we observe a slow process of dying of a lonely old man. 63 year old Lazarescu Dante Remus, after the intervention of his neighbours, is taken by an ambulance to different hospitals, where noone can or wants to help him. We do not observe the people but the insensate healthcare system which is not intended to aid eldery people, especially those with alcohol problems. A sorrowful film which could be made e.g. in Poland too.
The only thing that I really hate about this, all in all, decent film is it’s length. 153 min of steady view of the flat of Lazarescu, ambulance and interiors of hospitals. 153 min of repeating exactly the same questions and exactly the same arguments between ambulance crew and doctors. 153 min of silence of hospital corridors and groans of patients. 1h of this film is really enough to catch the point and additional 1,5h does not explain anything more, does not add any new emotions (apart from boredom and frustration) and generally does not make it any better. Everyone at least once spent a few hours in a queue in the hostpital. Does the same experience, but at home instead of hospital, changes it from “a problem of an inefficient healthcare system” into “piece of art”?

The first romanian film that I watched was 'Cea mai fericităfată din lume' by Radu Jude . Similarly to the previous one, we watch the action from the position of a neutral spectator, but I enjoyed this one a little bit more. We observe a conflict between a teenage daughter who won a car in a lottery organised by the producer of an orange drink, and her parents who want to sell it and invest in their small hostel. The numeorus arguments between them are interrupetd by recording the advertisement of the drink. Once again we are served repetitve dialogs and scenes, but the whole atmosphere of the situation is much more abstract and ironic. Well, and the film is “only” 90 min long.
